Our project in mass media https://srfgas.lu.lv/index.php/en/2020/01/30/656/ Thu, 30 Jan 2020 12:40:37 +0000 http://srfgas.lu.lv/?p=656 Towards the end of the project, the project team has prepared a press release with brief information on the project intentions, the work carried out and possible future perspectives in the context of the project and the industry represented.

The project has created an experimental plant capable of heating (gasifying) various types of refuse derived fuels – plastic, wood, paper and various biomass – at high temperatures, following the changes in the heating process, analyzing the materials and gases produced in these processes, and obtaining synthesis gas – a blend of reusable gases useful both as a fuel and as a feedstock for the chemical industry. The end products of the waste gasification process have been analyzed in laboratories to gain an idea of their potential for further use and to determine their potential environmental impact.

We are pleased that the information about the results of our project has created a wide coverage in the Latvian media space. The press release (in Latvian) has been published on the University of Latvia website, as well as on Diena.lv, LSM.lv, LA.lv, Skaties.lv, Forbes and other media.

European Conference on Renewable Energy Systems in Madrid https://srfgas.lu.lv/index.php/en/2019/06/16/european-conference-on-renewable-energy-systems-in-madrid/ Sun, 16 Jun 2019 14:24:45 +0000 http://srfgas.lu.lv/?p=614 7th European Conference on Renewable Energy Systems was held from 10 to 12 June in the Spanish city Madrid, with 482 scientists from 42 countries looking for solutions on the development and use of renewable energy, including waste. The most important research initiatives and directions presented in a conference were innovative approaches of thermochemical storage of energy, solutions for biomass processing for oil extraction and others. The University of Latvia was represented with a report of prof. Maris Klavins and PhD student Dmitry Porsnov “PROGRESS TOWARDS WASTE-TO-ENERGY APPROACH IMPLEMENTATION: GASIFICATION OF RECYCLE DERIVED FUEL”, that includes the most current outcomes of the current research project. Prof. M. Klavins also chaired the conference section and participated in planning the organization of the next conference series.

Solid waste gasification as an environmentally friendly process https://srfgas.lu.lv/index.php/en/2019/05/05/solid-waste-gasification-as-an-environmentally-friendly-process/ Sun, 05 May 2019 11:15:30 +0000 http://srfgas.lu.lv/?p=581 The May issue of “Illustrated Science” (Latvian – Ilustrētā Zinātne) magazine includes a popular scientific article that gives the general public an insight into the process of gasification of waste. The article highlights the main advantages of the waste gasification process – the safe recycling of potentially hazardous waste, a wide range of recyclable materials, as well as possible energy recovery without harmful substances in the process.

Proposals for improvement of normative acts https://srfgas.lu.lv/index.php/en/2019/04/29/589/ Mon, 29 Apr 2019 09:55:50 +0000 http://srfgas.lu.lv/?p=589 One of the important results of the project is the development of recommendations for amendments or additions to the regulatory enactments, which could lead to the recognition of waste recognized as a raw material, as well as to recognize the gasification process as a viable alternative to the classical biomass or waste incineration process.

The strengths of this process are the ability to recycle the non-recyclable or difficult or expensive recyclable fraction of waste, as well as the possibility of obtaining synthesis gas that is clean from tar and can be used for electricity, heat or catalytic synthesis for natural gas substitution or other energy carriers .

Work is under way to prepare such recommendations. The findings of the project team are summarized as well as the lessons learned from the discussion panel of the 77th Scientific Conference of the University of Latvia. Suggestions are expected to be submitted to MEPRD in May.

Popular science insight into the history of thermochemical technologies https://srfgas.lu.lv/index.php/en/2019/04/05/popular-science-insight-into-the-history-of-thermochemical-technologies/ Fri, 05 Apr 2019 10:45:31 +0000 http://srfgas.lu.lv/?p=572 In the latest issue of the magazine “Enerģija un Pasaule” a popular scientific article on the history of thermochemical processes (Latvian only) and the use of their products in our region is published. Matherial is prepared by our project teammate Dmitry Porshnov and covers usage of thermochemical technologies in our region since the beginning of our era. The article illustrates the evolution of the thermal processes starting from simple burning and reaching today’s widely used pyrolysis and gasification, as well as their potential application – waste recycling. The material has been prepared within the framework of the project “Variable fuel gasification for municipal solid waste recovery”.

The post was published with the kind permission of the editorial office of the magazine “Enerģija un Pasaule“.

The 77th scientific conference of the University of Latvia has ended https://srfgas.lu.lv/index.php/en/2019/02/07/the-77th-scientific-conference-of-the-university-of-latvia-has-ended/ Thu, 07 Feb 2019 08:11:40 +0000 http://srfgas.lu.lv/?p=557 On February 5 2019 the session of the 77th Scientific Conference of the University of Latvia “Waste Management in the 21st Century” was held with the aim to promote co-operation between waste policy developers, local government and industry representatives, as well as to present the industry with innovations, solutions and innovations.

Representatives of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Latvia, the Association of Local and Regional Governments of Latvia, representatives of waste management companies, as well as representatives, researchers and practitioners from other local and foreign universities and institutions (more than 60 participants from 6 countries) were widely represented in a solid waste management related section of the conference.

In the scope of the meeting, a wide-ranging discussion was held on the latest regulation of the European Union in the sector, the challenge posed by the new regulatory requirements both in the field of national legislation and in the practical implementation of requirements in the coming years. The discussion highlighted a number of issues that require closer cooperation and exchange of information between industry partners and, in the future, additions or clarifications to regulatory enactments and possibly environmental policy related to waste management. The discussion revealed that in the future, the disposal of waste at landfills will be significantly restricted, in Latvia it is necessary to significantly increase waste recycling capacity, as well as new, innovative solutions for better and more efficient recycling of various types of waste and recovery of valuable raw materials.

The lessons learned from the discussion are particularly valuable in the context of the UL project “Variable fuel gasification for municipal solid waste recovery”. It is planned that the conclusions of the conference will be taken as the basis for elaboration of recommendations for clarification of regulatory enactments in the field of waste management.

Experimental gasification unit completed https://srfgas.lu.lv/index.php/en/2019/01/30/experimental-gasification-unit-completed/ Wed, 30 Jan 2019 10:34:19 +0000 http://srfgas.lu.lv/?p=607 On January 23 this year, the most important section of our project – the experimental gasification plant – were completed. Aisis, Ltd company has fulfilled its obligations and delivered all sections of experimental unit to its new home at the premises of Latvian University.

The members of our team are still testing individual components of the unit, acquiring accompanying documentation, and testing the performance of the unit in the new conditions.

It is planned to carry out RDF and biomass tortification and gasification tests, try to get synthesis gas, and then analyze the composition, emissions, products and waste materials of all input materials. Analyzes of these substances are planned to be carried out on site, with the help of our team at LU laboratories and, if necessary, to attract external laboratories for specific tests.
