Project tasks

The concept “waste-to-energy” is one of cornerstones of EU energy policy, supporting development of energy independence, waste reduction. Incineration technologies cannot deliver cost effective small scale solutions needed for distributed waste management systems. To achieve resource efficient recovery and regeneration of municipal solid waste, further development of environmental technologies is needed.
Gasification of solid recovered fuels can make a difference if coupled with efficient gas cleaning and energy recovery. Efficiency of the system lays at the integrated feedstock preparation, gasification process and gas cleaning for final product – carbonized solids, syngas and condensable liquids. The challenge of the process is coping with variability of feedstock composition which leads to necessary adjustments for gasification process and stabile gas cleaning process.
The aim of the project is to develop system for gasification process for refuse derived fuel and gas cleaning for final products – carbonized solids, syngas and condensable liquids and validate gas cleaning system in conditions of feedstock variability, applicable for a small-scale installations. To reach this aim considering previous experience of project team members equipment development concept will be elaborated, the experimental prototype will be build and tested under experimental conditions. The main criteria for evaluation of the fuel gasification for municipal solid waste recovery system will be the energy production efficiency, composition of flue gasses and composition of carbonized residues. In the process of gasification municipal solid waste recovered fraction will be co-gasified with wood waste to deliver optimal process variables. Technology concentrates on closed loop syngas treatment, distillation of useful liquids and utilization of non-distillable liquids via the same gasification process.
Project outcomes will be recommendations for waste processing legislation in Latvia and industrial applications for end-products of different composition solid recovered fuels.

The main tasks of the Project are:

  • Analysis of gasification possibilities of RDF
  • Research of RDF pyrolysis – composition analysis
  • Development of demo unit for RDF gasification
  • Determine emission levels of RDF gasification
  • Composition analysis of MSW
